Notes, recent work, and ideas from Natural Studio, a Brooklyn-based photography studio creating natural, contemporary portraits and headshots for professionals, creatives, and businesses throughout New York City.

Portraits & Headshots in NYC

Finding the right portrait or headshot photographer in New York City isn't always easy. There are countless options, but photography is personal—the style, feeling, and overall approach need to connect with what you're looking for.

Maybe you want something professional, but not overly corporate. Polished, but not overly retouched. Contemporary, but still timeless. Most importantly, you want a photograph that feels natural and actually looks like you.

That's the approach behind Natural Studio.

We specialize in portraits and headshots with beautiful light, simple compositions, and a relaxed, natural feel. Rather than relying on a formula, we work individually with each person to create photographs that feel specific to them.

A Relaxed, Collaborative Approach

You don't need to know how to pose or be naturally comfortable in front of a camera. Providing direction and creating an environment where you can relax is part of what we do.

Throughout the session, we share images as we shoot. This allows us to work collaboratively, see what's working, make adjustments, and explore different expressions and possibilities together.

The goal is to create photographs that are refined and professional while still feeling open, approachable, and real.

Portraits for Professional & Personal Use

We photograph actors, artists, entrepreneurs, executives, creatives, and professionals working across a broad range of industries.

Our portraits and headshots are used for:

  • LinkedIn and professional profiles

  • Company websites and biographies

  • Corporate and executive headshots

  • Acting headshots

  • Personal branding

  • Press and publicity

  • Social media

  • Speaker and author profiles

  • Real estate

  • Creative portfolios

Whichever approach makes sense for you, the underlying philosophy remains the same: beautiful light, thoughtful composition, natural direction, and photographs that feel like you.

Natural Studio has grown considerably this year, and we're excited about what's ahead in 2023.

How We Work Is Who We Are

How a photograph is made has a lot to do with how it ultimately feels.

At Natural Studio, our approach to portrait and headshot photography is based on simplicity. Beautiful light. Thoughtful composition. Natural direction. And enough space for the person in front of the camera to relax and be themselves.

We often hear from clients that they chose us because our photographs felt different from the more conventional headshots they were seeing. They describe the work as natural, fresh, and real—and that's something we care deeply about.

Our lighting is inspired by natural light, even when we're working in the studio. Our direction is relaxed rather than overly posed. We share images throughout the shoot so that the process becomes collaborative, allowing us to see what's working and make adjustments together.

We also believe that not everything needs to be perfected. A great portrait isn't necessarily about eliminating every imperfection or controlling every detail. It's about paying attention to the things that matter—light, expression, composition, personality—and knowing when to leave something alone.

That less-is-more philosophy carries through to our final retouching as well. We want the finished photograph to feel refined without losing the character of the person in it.

In that sense, how we work really is who we are.

We photograph actors, artists, entrepreneurs, executives, designers, creatives, and professionals at our private Brooklyn studio and on location throughout New York City.

You can explore more of our portrait and headshot photography on our website and read about our clients' experiences on Google and our Testimonials page.

If you're looking for a portrait or headshot photographer in NYC and our approach resonates with you, we'd love to hear from you.

A Different Approach to NYC Headshots

Fall is here in New York City, and we've been busy at our Brooklyn studio photographing actors, artists, executives, designers, entrepreneurs, musicians, architects, real estate professionals, and people from across the city's creative and professional communities.

At Natural Studio, we take a slightly different approach to portrait and headshot photography.

We're inspired by simplicity, beautiful light, and a modern sense of refinement. Rather than relying on overly posed expressions or a formula for how a professional headshot should look, we work with each person individually and allow room for the photographs to develop naturally.

We pay attention to light, composition, expression, and the subtle moments in between. The goal is to create images that feel polished but not overly produced—photographs that feel present, relaxed, and genuinely connected to the person in front of the camera.

Sometimes that results in a classic headshot. Sometimes it becomes something closer to a portrait. We like having room for both.

Our private Brooklyn studio provides a quiet, relaxed environment for shoots, and we also photograph people on location throughout New York City.

If you're looking for a different approach to portraits and headshots in NYC, we'd love to hear from you.

NYC Corporate Headshots

At Natural Studio, we create corporate and professional headshots with a clean, contemporary, and natural feel.

Being professional doesn't have to mean looking stiff, overly formal, or impersonal. We believe a strong corporate headshot can feel polished and refined while still being relaxed, approachable, and authentic to the person being photographed.

We work with individuals, executives, companies, and teams throughout New York City, creating headshots for company websites, LinkedIn profiles, corporate communications, press and publicity, speaking engagements, and other professional uses.

Corporate Headshots for Individuals & Teams

For companies photographing multiple people, consistency is important. We work with clients before the shoot to understand their visual needs and create an approach to lighting, background, composition, and framing that can be carried across the entire team.

At the same time, we don't want everyone to look exactly the same. We provide natural direction throughout the shoot, allowing each person's expression and personality to come through while maintaining a cohesive overall look.

Depending on the project, we can photograph a small team, an entire company, or create individual executive portraits with a more personalized approach.

At Your Office or Our Brooklyn Studio

Corporate headshots can be photographed at our private Brooklyn studio or on location at your office anywhere in New York City.

For on-site shoots, we bring the necessary lighting and photography equipment to you. We can create clean, simple headshots within an office environment or incorporate the surrounding space for environmental portraits with more context and personality.

Our Brooklyn studio near Park Slope and Gowanus is also available for individuals and smaller groups who prefer a private studio environment.

A Relaxed Approach to Professional Photography

Whether we're photographing one person or an entire team, our approach remains the same: beautiful light, thoughtful composition, natural direction, and close attention to detail.

Throughout the shoot, we share images as we go so we can make adjustments and ensure we're creating photographs that work for both the individual and the company.

The goal is professional photography that feels contemporary and cohesive without losing the personality of the people in it.

If you're looking for corporate headshots in NYC for yourself, your team, or your company, please feel free to get in touch through our Contact page. We'd love to hear about your project.

NYC Actor Headshots

At Natural Studio, we photograph actors with a simple goal: to create headshots that feel natural, expressive, and genuinely connected to the person in front of the camera.

A great actor headshot doesn't need to be complicated. It needs to look like you, but it should also have presence. Expression, light, body language, and the subtle moments between expressions can communicate far more than an elaborate setup or pose.

That's why our approach is intentionally relaxed.

We use beautiful light, simple backgrounds, and natural direction, giving you room to settle into the shoot rather than trying to manufacture a particular expression. We photograph a range of subtle variations—from open and approachable to quieter or more serious—while keeping the images grounded in who you actually are.

There's something inherently truthful about a good portrait. When someone becomes comfortable enough to stop thinking quite so much about the camera, that's often when the most interesting photographs begin to happen.

Our private Brooklyn studio is designed to make that process easy. It's a quiet, comfortable space where we can focus on the photography without unnecessary distractions.

You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what to do in front of the camera. You can show up as yourself, step into our world, and let us take care of the rest.

We photograph both established and emerging actors in New York City and can create a range of headshots for different roles and casting needs while maintaining a consistent, natural aesthetic.

If you're an actor looking for new headshots in NYC, we'd love to hear from you.

Best NYC Headshot Photographer?

We recently asked a new client how they found Natural Studio.

Their answer: “I just Googled ‘best headshot photographer NYC’ and you popped up.”

We'll take it.

Of course, we wouldn't claim to be the “best.” Photography is far too subjective for that, and finding the right photographer has a lot to do with finding work that connects with your own taste and what you're looking for.

What we can say is that we have a very clear idea of the kind of photographs we want to make.

At Natural Studio, we approach headshots as portraits. We're interested in beautiful light, simple compositions, natural expressions, and photographs that feel relaxed and specific to the person in front of the camera.

We want the finished image to feel polished and professional, but not overly posed or processed. Something contemporary and refined, but still real.

That approach isn't necessarily for everyone—and that's okay. But for people who respond to a more natural, understated style of portrait photography, it tends to be a very good fit.

Most of our sessions take place at our private Brooklyn studio near Park Slope and Gowanus. We also photograph individuals and teams on location throughout New York City, including offices, homes, outdoor spaces, and other environments.

So, are we the best NYC headshot photographer?

We'll leave that up to you.

You can explore our work on the Natural Studio website and read reviews from our clients on Google.

If you like what you see, we'd love to hear from you.

Natural Studio News: New Work & NYC Photo Locations

We've added some new portrait and headshot photography to our Portfolio page. Take a look to see what we've been shooting recently at our Brooklyn studio and around New York City.

We were also happy to be included in a recent Redfin article about unique photography locations throughout NYC.

For the article, we shared some thoughts about photographing in DUMBO, Brooklyn—one of our favorite areas for outdoor portraits. With its waterfront, open spaces, architecture, and changing natural light, DUMBO offers plenty of possibilities while still feeling distinctly New York.

We love photographing people outdoors, especially as the weather gets warmer, and it's always nice to step outside the studio and respond to a different environment.

Of course, our Brooklyn studio is here too for anyone looking for something simpler, quieter, and more controlled.

You can explore our latest work on the Portfolio page and read more about our clients' experiences on Google.

New Work — Portraits & Headshots, NYC

We've added some new portrait and headshot photography to our Portfolio page.

We've been busy photographing people at our Brooklyn studio, while the warmer weather has also given us more opportunities to get outside and shoot on location around New York City.

Whether we're working in the studio or outdoors, we like to keep the focus on the person being photographed. Our approach is intentionally simple: beautiful light, clean compositions, natural direction, and as little unnecessary distraction as possible.

Less is more, but the details matter.

We pay close attention to light, expression, composition, clothing, background, and all the small elements that come together to make a photograph feel right. At the same time, we want the process itself to remain relaxed and collaborative.

The goal is to create portraits that feel natural and present, with a simplicity that allows them to stand the test of time.

We've photographed writers, artists, actors, architects, designers, entrepreneurs, executives, and people working throughout technology, publishing, law, education, real estate, and other industries.

Portraits & Headshots, NYC — Our Specialty

Portrait and headshot photography is our specialty at Natural Studio.

Our approach to photography is closely connected to what we love and what inspires us: nature, simplicity, a warm kind of modernism, and beautiful light.

Those influences find their way into the photographs in subtle ways. We're drawn to clean compositions, natural expressions, quiet details, and lighting that feels soft and dimensional. Even when we're working entirely in the studio, we often look to natural light as our reference.

We want the images to feel refined without feeling overly controlled. Contemporary without being trendy. Simple, but never generic.

Most importantly, we want the person to remain at the center of the photograph.

We work with actors, artists, designers, entrepreneurs, executives, architects, and people from a wide range of creative and professional fields. They come to us for actor headshots, corporate and executive portraits, personal branding, publicity, websites, LinkedIn, social media, model portfolios, and sometimes simply because they want a great portrait of themselves.

Whatever the reason for the shoot, we approach it as a collaboration. We create a relaxed environment, pay close attention to the light and details, and give each session enough room for something natural to happen.

Our private Brooklyn studio is located near Park Slope and Gowanus, and we also photograph people on location throughout New York City.

If our approach to portraits and headshots feels like the right fit for you, we'd love to hear from you.

Recent Work — Portraits & Headshots, NYC

We've been busy at Natural Studio, photographing lots of new portraits and headshots at our Brooklyn studio.

One of the things we enjoy most about this work is the variety of people who come through the door. On any given week, we might photograph an actor, artist, entrepreneur, designer, executive, writer, or someone simply looking for a great portrait of themselves.

No two sessions are exactly the same, but the atmosphere we try to create is consistent.

Our studio is a relaxed, creative space, and the way we work is open and collaborative. We share images throughout the session, talk about what's working, make adjustments as we go, and give the shoot enough room to develop naturally.

For us, the experience of making the photographs is connected to the photographs themselves. When the environment feels comfortable and the process isn't overly rigid, people have more room to simply be themselves in front of the camera.

You can get a better sense of what it's like to work with us by reading our client testimonials or reviews on Google.

And, of course, you can explore our recent portrait and headshot photography throughout the Natural Studio website.

If you'd like to work together, please feel free to reach out.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year from Natural Studio. We hope everyone is having a wonderful start to 2022.

Winter has settled into New York City, and we've been enjoying the slightly quieter rhythm of the season. It's still New York, of course, so “quiet” is relative—but there's something about these colder months that makes the city feel a little slower.

Our Brooklyn studio is warm, comfortable, and a great place to spend these winter days making photographs.

The year has already been off to a busy start. We've been shooting lots of new portraits and headshots and meeting an interesting mix of people along the way, including actors and people working in real estate, fashion, design, film, and other creative and professional fields.

We're looking forward to the year ahead and all the people we'll have the opportunity to photograph.

Happy 2022!

Cheers,
NS

Reflecting on 2021

We'll always remember 2021 as a year of new beginnings at Natural Studio.

After being closed for much of 2020 due to COVID-19, we reopened in the spring of 2021 and began photographing people again throughout New York City.

Then, over the summer, we moved into our new studio in Brooklyn.

It felt good to have a space of our own again and to see the studio gradually come to life. Throughout the year, we had the opportunity to photograph and collaborate with people working in acting, design, real estate, technology, fashion, fine art, film, and many other creative and professional fields.

While the people we photographed came from very different backgrounds, many shared something in common: they were engaged in work and ideas that mattered to them.

There's something rewarding about getting to meet so many different people through photography and, for a short time, becoming part of what they're creating or pursuing.

We also continued to experiment, both in the studio and outdoors, making photographs and refining the natural, simple approach to portraiture that continues to define Natural Studio.

After everything that came before it, we're especially grateful for what 2021 brought—the new studio, the people we met, the photographs we made, and the opportunity to begin again.

It's been a memorable year.

Cheers,
NS

Children’s Portrait Photography in Brooklyn

We recently had a great children's portrait session at our Brooklyn studio.

One of the things we love about photographing children is their spontaneity. You never know exactly what you're going to get, and that's part of what makes it interesting.

When photographing kids, we tend to work quickly and intuitively, capturing a range of expressions, moods, gestures, and moments while their energy and curiosity are still engaged.

Rather than asking children to hold specific poses or expressions, we prefer to give them room to move around, play, and respond naturally to what's happening. We create a simple environment, offer a little direction when it's helpful, and stay ready for the moments that happen in between.

Sometimes the strongest photograph is a classic portrait. Other times it's a laugh, a gesture, a moment of concentration, or something completely unexpected.

The goal isn't to control every moment. It's to create the right conditions for something real to happen—and be there with the camera when it does.

Photographing children is always a little unpredictable, which is exactly what we like about it.

Cheers,
NS

What Makes A Great Photo?

What makes a great photograph? A great portrait? A great headshot?

There isn't a simple answer.

There are, of course, the visible elements of a photograph: light, composition, color, expression, gesture, and timing. All of these things matter. But then there are the less tangible qualities that are much harder to define.

A great photograph often has a certain presence to it. Something feels right.

For portrait photography, that has a lot to do with the relationship between the photographer and the person being photographed. How comfortable someone feels, how closely the photographer is paying attention, and how willing both people are to respond to what's happening in the moment can all find their way into the final image.

Technique matters, but technique alone isn't enough.

We think some of the most interesting photographs happen when there's a balance between intention and openness. You create the light, consider the composition, provide direction, and pay attention to the details—but you also leave room for something you didn't plan.

A subtle change in expression. A gesture. A shift in the light. A moment when someone briefly forgets about the camera.

Maybe that's part of what makes a great photograph difficult to define. You can create the conditions for it, but you can't always predict exactly when it will happen.

That's part of what keeps photography interesting.

Cheers,
NS
