What makes a great photograph? A great portrait? A great headshot?

There isn't a simple answer.

There are, of course, the visible elements of a photograph: light, composition, color, expression, gesture, and timing. All of these things matter. But then there are the less tangible qualities that are much harder to define.

A great photograph often has a certain presence to it. Something feels right.

For portrait photography, that has a lot to do with the relationship between the photographer and the person being photographed. How comfortable someone feels, how closely the photographer is paying attention, and how willing both people are to respond to what's happening in the moment can all find their way into the final image.

Technique matters, but technique alone isn't enough.

We think some of the most interesting photographs happen when there's a balance between intention and openness. You create the light, consider the composition, provide direction, and pay attention to the details—but you also leave room for something you didn't plan.

A subtle change in expression. A gesture. A shift in the light. A moment when someone briefly forgets about the camera.

Maybe that's part of what makes a great photograph difficult to define. You can create the conditions for it, but you can't always predict exactly when it will happen.

That's part of what keeps photography interesting.

Actors have always been an important part of the work we do at Natural Studio.

Over the years, we've photographed established and emerging actors in New York City, including David Call, Conor Leslie, Ezra Miller, Bryan Dromherhauser, Tonya Glanz, and many others.

Our approach to actor headshots is rooted in portraiture. We use beautiful light, simple compositions, and natural direction to create photographs that feel expressive and connected to the person in front of the camera.

After having to slow things down considerably during the COVID-19 pandemic, we're very happy to say that Natural Studio is fully reopened.

We're vaccinated, taking appropriate precautions, and, most importantly, excited to be making photographs and working with people again.

After such a long and unusual period, it feels especially good to be back in the studio creating portraits, headshots, and new work.

We're looking forward to what's ahead.

We loved working with NIV, an emerging fashion brand based in New York City, to photograph imagery for their ready-to-wear lookbook.

The shoot took place at a studio in Chelsea, where we created a simple series of photographs focused on the collection's color, texture, and form.

The designer's artistry, honed in India, brought a distinctive point of view to the collection and a sense of refined simplicity that we were naturally drawn to.

It was a pleasure collaborating with NIV and bringing the collection to life through photography.

If glasses are part of how you normally look, there's no reason to take them off for a portrait.

In fact, the right frames can add character, shape, and personality to a photograph—especially when they're something you wear every day.

So here's to keeping the glasses on and making them part of the portrait.

We're drawn to straightforward portraits—someone looking into the camera, simply and directly.

But we're equally interested in what happens in between.

A shift in expression. A glance away. A laugh after the photograph you thought you were making. The small, unplanned moments that happen when someone briefly stops thinking about the camera.

We like making room for both.

The more direct images can have a simplicity and presence to them, while the in-between moments often reveal something less expected. Together, they can create a fuller and more interesting portrait of a person.

Sometimes the photograph you weren't quite looking for becomes the one you remember.

We had the pleasure of working with New York–based fashion designer Maud Heline at her studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn.

In addition to photographing imagery from her collection, we created a series of portraits of Maud for upcoming magazine features and publicity.

Photographing her in her own studio gave us the opportunity to make images that felt connected to both the person and the work—simple, natural portraits within the environment where she creates.

There was also an immediate connection between Maud's design sensibility and our own approach to photography: clean, understated, and refined without feeling overly polished.

A perfect match.

We recently had the pleasure of photographing the team at MABU, a Brooklyn-based architecture firm, at their offices in Williamsburg.

At the time, MABU was expanding and refining its brand, and they needed a new collection of portraits and headshots to accompany that next chapter.

Rather than creating traditional corporate headshots, we worked together on an approach that felt more connected to their studio and the people behind it—relaxed, contemporary, and appropriate for a creative practice.

Photographing the team in their own environment also gave us the opportunity to incorporate elements of the space while keeping the images simple and focused on the individuals.

It's always rewarding to collaborate with other creative people and find a visual approach that feels true to the work they do.

At Natural Studio, we love natural light.

Some of our favorite portraits and headshots have been created simply by working with the light that's already there. But natural light isn't always predictable—or even available. Especially in New York City, the weather, time of day, location, and surrounding buildings can completely change the light from one moment to the next.

That's why we've spent years learning how to create and control light ourselves.

Using professional studio lighting, we can recreate many of the qualities we love about natural light—the softness of a window, the warmth of sunlight, and the subtle way light falls across a face.

Whether we're photographing someone in our Brooklyn studio, an office, a home, or another location, we don't have to depend on finding the perfect natural light. We can shape the light to work for the person and the environment.

For us, it doesn't really matter whether the light is natural or created. What matters is how it looks and feels in the photograph.

Knowing how to shape and control light allows us to create great light, and great photographs, almost anywhere.
