Recently we have had the pleasure of shooting some portraits and headshots outside around New York CIty at various locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Although we mostly shoot at our own Brooklyn photo studio, it’s always nice and a fun challenge to set up elsewhere in a new environment and yet still be able to capture the type of classic yet modern and fresh imagery that we love. Plus it’s always great to just be outside and get some fresh air!

We recently did a really fun photo shoot in our Brooklyn studio with some awesome kids! It’s quite different photographing children than it is adults. You have to be very quick and keep the energy going or they will lose interest. The best thing about photographing kids is that kids are always in the moment, and so you really have a great opportunity to capture some real authentic moments. And that is always our goal at Natural Studio—to capture natural authentic images. Images that look great, but also really show you what the people look like as opposed to a an over photoshopped look that you see sometimes.

When photographing children, we use our own knowledge, skills, and experience to work with the talent to create classic, timeless photographs. We focus on what we love which is soft amazing light and a really natural, fresh kind of vibe that aims to capture the unique authentic character of the individual.

It’s kind of an age old question when it comes to photography…what is better, color or black & white?

There is no one size fits all answer. We see the world in color and we often want that reflected back to us in the images we view. We want to see ‘how it really looks’. But this can easily change when we see the simple reductive beauty of a great black & white photograph. Photography is art, and art does not have to always perfectly represent our everyday reality.

But when it comes to professional portrait and headshot photography, the intended use of the images comes into play. Sometimes color may make more sense or perhaps some clean minimal black & white images would really hit the spot. There are not really any actual rules despite what you may hear and even if there were, then why does that mean you have to follow them?

Photography is always in need of what is basically 'art direction’. It is a visual language which some are more fluent in than others. This is true when it comes to not only the creation of the images but even the view and consumption of them. So the choice between color or black & white, comes down to it being just one of many choices that are made during the creative process. One aspect of the production amongst all the others that include lighting, set, wardrobe, retouching, and more.

In most instances, in contemporary times the natural way to go is just color. But it’s nice to always keep in mind, and use when it feels appropriate, the power that black & white can add to a make a classic yet modern timeless image.

Here at Natural Studio, another area we often work in is shooting portfolio images, headshots, and digitals for models. For these types of shoots, we either work with the model’s agency or just directly with the model. The models we work with cover a broad range from totally brand new to modeling to those who have been in the business for several decades. There is a fun creative opportunity regardless of the subject’s experience level. We use our own knowledge, skills, and experience to work with the talent to create classic, timeless photographs. Our work is known for its quality, natural looking light, and real personal connection as opposed to the overdone, over processed, artificial light type of look. There is usually either no makeup or just a light foundation as we want the talent to look great but we also want to show what they actually look like. We avoid elaborate poses and other distractions and instead focus on what we love which is soft amazing light and a really natural, fresh kind of vibe that aims to capture the unique authentic character of the individual.

We recently had the pleasure of working with Studio PPARK, a full service design practice focused primarily on residential construction and renovation. We shot on location at their design studio in Irvington, New York (Westchester County). We complemented the nice natural window light there on the waterfront with some of our own soft portable strobes, to create a variety of headshots and environmental portraits.

5. Attention to detail
All of the above aspects are great, but without attention to detail it all falls apart. With so many different elements working together seamlessly to make a great photograph, it can be easy to miss something and have it mess up the photo. Sure, some things you can fix in photoshop but it’s always better to get it right when actually shooting than trying to fix it up later. That is why we always pay close attention to the little things, in addition to lighting, composition, and expressions.

6. Retouching
Retouching is a part of the photography process where things can go wrong. There’s either too much done or it’s just done poorly. At Natural Studio, we work with light and shoot in a style that aims to minimize the need for retouching so images come out more natural looking. We also take an approach to retouching where it should not be overdone. Whatever color processing or retouching work that is done, it needs to be appropriate for the image and conducted with a respect and appreciation for natural beauty.

7. Convenience
The reality is that we all lead pretty busy lives, and so whatever we do it’s often important for there to be an element of convenience. That’s why at Natural Studio, we have our own comfortable private photo studio in the South Slope area of Brooklyn in NYC. It is convenient to the R, N, & G subway lines. What we often hear is that our work was quite a bit different from what they were seeing out there…in a good way. They often say it stood out to them for its quality, natural looking light, and real personal connection as opposed to the overdone, too processed, artificial light type of look they have seen. This totally makes sense to us. Our approach is inspired by natural light and a less is more type of approach to portraits and headshots. An appreciation for refined simplicity informs how we work and comes through in our images.
