Finding A Professional Photographer in NYC

Are you looking for a professional portrait or headshot photographer in the NYC area?

If the answer is yes, our information below can help you in your search and could also help determine if we are the right photographer for you.

1. Specialization
Jack of all trades but master of none is often a problem when seeking a photographer. At Natural Studio, we don’t shoot in tons of different genres of photography. Instead, we specialize in what we like and what we are great at, which is portrait and headshot photographs shot in an authentic natural style.

2. Lighting
Photography is mostly about light. A great photographer is one who understands how to work with light. At Natural Studio, our interest in light and our extensive experience working with it, has led to an understanding of how to create images with light that is always soft, flattering, and looks natural.

3. Emotion
An image that contains no emotion has little appeal. It is the photographer’s job to work with the subject and catch a moment where there is something there, some kind of connection. It could be a smile, but it does have to be, it could be more serious, or just something kinda in between. But it can’t just be a blank stare. At Natural Studio, we are always looking for those kind of in between moments that give life to a photo.

4. Vibe
This is related to emotion but it is not quite the same. What is the vibe of the photography? Is it outdated? Tacky? Overly serious or even embarrassing? At Natural Studio, the vibe of our work is relaxed, modern, and fresh. We avoid trendy in favor of a more classic timeless approach. And that is important as it not only looks and feels good, but it gives the images more staying power and they remain relevant for years to come.

5. Attention to detail
All of the above aspects are great, but without attention to detail it all falls apart. With so many different elements working together seamlessly to make a great photograph, it can be easy to miss something and have it mess up the photo. Sure, some things you can fix in photoshop but it’s always better to get it right when actually shooting than trying to fix it up later. That is why we always pay close attention to the little things, in addition to lighting, composition, and expressions.

6. Retouching
Retouching is a part of the photography process where things can go wrong. There’s either too much done or it’s just done poorly. At Natural Studio, we work with light and shoot in a style that aims to minimize the need for retouching so images come out more natural looking. We also take an approach to retouching where it should not be overdone. Whatever color processing or retouching work that is done, it needs to be appropriate for the image and conducted with a respect and appreciation for natural beauty.

7. Convenience
The reality is that we all lead pretty busy lives, and so whatever we do it’s often important for there to be an element of convenience. That’s why at Natural Studio, we have our own comfortable private photo studio in the South Slope area of Brooklyn in NYC. It is convenient to the R, N, & G subway lines. We have very flexible hours during the week and also on weekends. In addition, when desired, we shoot at the homes and offices of our clients throughout the NYC area. And our most recent development is that we are now available for shoots in Westchester County, NY by appointment.

8. Proven track record
A photographer must have a proven track record. The work must stand on its own and speak for itself. Our work inspires us. To see our portfolio of portrait and headshot photography, click HERE. In addition to looking at our work, you can read our highly rated business reviews and see us on a map here on Google. And also, our wonderful clients have compiled a list of glowing testimonials, available here on our website.

We use our extensive technical skills to balance our light so it feels natural and not overdone or fake. We work with you one on one to achieve unique personal images that feel relaxed, open, and authentic and capture your unique individual personality. Ready To Wear - Fashion Lookbook, NYC

Natural Studio loved working with NIV, an emerging fashion brand based in New York City. We shot images for their lookbook in one of our favorite studios in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC. The designer’s artistry, honed in India, is expressed through her use of color and texture—resulting in a unique vision of refined simplicity.

Whether you wear glasses because you need to or you just like them for style reasons, keeping those frames on for some portraits can definitely be a great idea, especially if they are cool! So here’s to embracing your spectacles when you put your best face forward.

In The Moment
IMG_7578_400.jpg

In our portrait and headshot photography, we always like to get honest straightforward images when working with talent. But we also have a passion for capturing ‘in between’ type moments that happen naturally as sometimes those are the images that feel the most authentic. It’s great to do a bit of both and just show different moods—especially as then the actor or model gets to reveal more personality and show their emotional range.

A Perfect Match

Natural Studio had the pleasure of working with talented NYC based fashion designer Maud Heline. In addition to shooting some lookbook images of her fashion collection, we photographed some fresh clean portraits of Maud at her studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn that she needed for upcoming magazine features and public relations. The style of her design work and vibe of her overall brand was a perfect match for our photography.

We Love Working With Other Creatives
_MG_6346_400.jpg

Natural Studio recently had the pleasure of working with MABU, the Brooklyn, New York based Architectural firm. We photographed some portraits of them in their own offices in the neighborhood of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. MABU is expanding and was doing a bit of rebranding, so it was great to be able to help them along in the process. We collaborated to come up with a collection of portraits and headshots that felt a bit more casual, relaxed, and fresh than what you might normally find in their field. It’s always a pleasure to work with other creatives based here in NYC.

Some Thoughts on Light
_MG_1568_400.jpg

At Natural Studio, we love natural light. Many times, we have been able to create some of our favorite portraits and headshots just by working with natural light. The reality though is that depending on only sunlight for a photo shoot can be a risky affair. Especially since we work in New York City, where depending on the weather year-round would not be practical. That’s why we became skilled at using the artificial light from professional strobe lights to create that same type of relaxed, airy, sunlit aesthetic. Light itself is one of our major inspirations. It’s often what makes a good photograph. So being in control of the light is a great thing as it allows us the freedom to focus on our subject, their expression, and all the other elements that make up a great image.
