NYC Portraits & Headshots: Color vs. Black & White
It's one of the oldest questions in photography: color or black & white?
There isn't a single right answer. Color can feel immediate and natural because it's how we experience the world. It can bring subtle details into a portrait—the color of someone's eyes, clothing, skin tone, or the environment surrounding them.
Black & white does something different. By removing color, an image can become simpler and more graphic. Light, expression, shape, and composition come forward, sometimes giving a portrait a quality that feels both classic and contemporary.
When it comes to professional portraits and headshots, we generally recommend color as the starting point. It's versatile, current, and works naturally across company websites, LinkedIn, personal branding, press, social media, and other professional uses.
But there are times when black & white is exactly right.
A strong black & white portrait can feel quieter, more expressive, or more timeless. It can also simplify an image and draw more attention to the person rather than the colors surrounding them.
Ultimately, we don't think there need to be strict rules about it. Color versus black & white is simply one of the many creative decisions that goes into making a photograph—along with lighting, composition, wardrobe, background, expression, and retouching.
At Natural Studio, our goal is always to make photographs that feel natural and authentic while still paying close attention to the visual details that make an image beautiful. Sometimes that means color. Sometimes it means black & white. And often, we like both.
